Medieval fortress of Poilvache

Description

This gem of medieval heritage in the middle of the Champalle National Natural Reserve has a wide range of themes on offer exploring medieval architecture, archeology, history, nature, geography, numismatics and institutions.

The medieval Ruins in Poilvache comprise a castle and a middle ages town. The earliest mention of the site is in a text dating from 1228. It was destroyed in 1430 by a coalition of Dinantais and Hutois from the Principality of Liege.

Opening hours

The mediaeval site of Poilvache is open to the public:

  •   Every weekend from 1 April to 31 October.
  •   In July and August: daily, 10.30am - 6pm

By prior booking: guided tours in season and out of season (Fr/Nl/Eng.) (2 weeks in advance)

Prices

  •   under 6: free
  •   6 - 12 years: tour (+ explanatory leaflet): €1
  •   12 - 18 years: tour (+ explanatory leaflet): €1.25
  • Adults: tour (+ explanatory leaflet): €2
  • Senior citizens: tour (+ explanatory leaflet): €1.25
  • Groups (10 people minimum): Guided tour: €4/adult and €2/child

*explanatory leaflet to be returned or purchased at the end of the visit

Getting here

  • By car -> via the E411, exit at Spontin, 10km towards Yvoir, turn left at Evrehailles.
  • By train -> Yvoir station on the Brussels-Namur-Dinant line.
  • By boat -> river halt on Ile d'Yvoir + stop possible downstream from the Houx locks
